How the XRP to GBP rate is calculated

XRP has no single official price. It trades around the clock across dozens of exchanges, and the number you see quoted anywhere is a volume-weighted average of recent trades. Most of that volume is priced in dollars or stablecoins, so a GBP figure is usually XRP's dollar price converted at the prevailing GBP/USD rate. That means the sterling price moves for two independent reasons: XRP itself moving, and the pound moving against the dollar. If XRP holds flat in dollars while sterling strengthens by 1%, the XRP/GBP price falls by roughly 1% — nothing happened to XRP at all.

Why the price you pay is never the price you see

The mid-market rate sits halfway between the highest price a buyer will pay and the lowest price a seller will accept. Nobody actually trades at it. When you buy, you pay above it; when you sell, you receive below it. On top of that gap — the spread — UK platforms typically layer a trading fee of 0.1% to 1.5%, a card or instant-buy premium that can reach 2% to 4%, and an FX margin if they convert your pounds to dollars internally. Add withdrawal costs and a small round trip can cost several percent before the price has moved a penny. Our XRP profit calculator lets you enter your real buy price, sell price and fees so the result reflects your actual position rather than a headline number.

Reading the sterling market cap and volume

Market cap is simply the current price multiplied by circulating supply, expressed here in pounds. It is a scale marker, not a pot of money: no one has paid that amount in, and no one could withdraw it. Twenty-four-hour volume is more practically useful — it tells you how much trading actually happened, which is what determines whether a large order moves the price. Thin volume plus a big order equals slippage. If you want to test what a given price target would require at the level of market cap and supply, use the market cap simulator and read our guide to the maths behind XRP price targets.

Ripple, XRP and the naming muddle

Searches for "Ripple to pound" vastly outnumber searches for "XRP to GBP", which is a legacy of early coverage that treated the company and the asset as one thing. They are not. Ripple is a private payments company; the XRP Ledger is an open network that would continue running if the company disappeared tomorrow. Getting the distinction right matters when you read news: a headline about the company is not automatically a headline about the asset. Our explainers on what XRP is and what Ripple the company does cover the split in detail.

If you are converting for tax

HMRC expects disposals to be recorded in pounds at the time of the transaction, so a live rate on its own is not enough — you need the rate that applied on the date and time of each buy, sell, swap or spend. Keep exchange statements, note the GBP value at the point of disposal, and remember that swapping XRP for another cryptoasset is a disposal even though no pounds changed hands. Our UK XRP tax guide explains capital gains treatment, pooling and record-keeping. It is general information, not tax advice.

Where to go next

Rates are indicative and sourced from a third-party aggregator; they may differ from your exchange. Nothing on this page is financial advice. Cryptoassets are unregulated in the UK and high risk — you may lose all the money you invest.
